Today, electronic payment methods are everywhere. At one time, opening a cheque account was a financial rite of passage for many young Australians. Now, a generation has reached financial independence with no need for cheque books. As a method of payment, cheques are in long-term decline - Australians are choosing to use other, more efficient and cost-effective payment options.

This evolution has understandably led to speculation about the future of cheques and other paper-based payments. As the Australian payments industry body, APCA has been examining this social evolution and now seeks community views.

APCA will be talking to consumers, users and acceptors of cheques. These views will inform industry policy on the future direction of cheques in the evolving payments system.
